I should blog more...
I should blog more… But frankly do neither find, muse nor energy to do so. So what I will do instead is dumping a longer posting any now and then, but more regulary instead. Think of it more like a… blogyfied newsletter? The heck I know; as the old adage goes:
The Two Hardest Problems in Software Development: Naming Things & Cache Invalidation
Also this time is the first time I try writing this posting in a Jupyter Notebook, in the hope that exporting it to Markdown and importing to Jekyll Will Simply Work™.
German Government trying crack down Information Freedom Law
Looks like the German government is sick of answering pesky questions from annoying citizen, so they try to limit who can actually request information and also prohibit anonymous requests. This seems to be a coordinated effort against the Portal Frag den Staat which does all the heavy lifting for citizen with questions, such as finding the correct recipient, following up and whatnot.
So if you live in Germany, Frag den Staat appreciates any support, not matter if it’s a Donation or signing the petition.
Fermi Estimation Games!
I love Fermi Estimation games. Here four online versions you might enjoy.
- Fermi Questions Online Practice Test - a classic. Only expects the exponent, has eom pretty challenging questions.
- Fermi Questions - World Style, more mainstream questions, but nicely done - you can also optionally give your personal confidence level so that you can track your progress while you play along.
- fermi.gg - the newest one and it’s still beta. I only dfound it by accident. It may spontaneously break any now and then, but it’s nice.
- fermi.poker - the exot! It’s exactly what you think it is. Grab a drink, invite friends, hustle along.
AI Bros screwing the world’s economy/people/environment/social oder, episode 245
I really won’t spend much time on this topic, but here some fun facts.
- Nvidia in talks with OpenAI to guarantee $250 billion financing for data center, WSJ reports - oh yes! I mean, evn though Nvidia has a market cap of ~5 T$, that’s a shitload of money. Also, looking at their latest statement: “Total current assets: USD 125,605”. So… how do they want to guarantee a value which is the double of their total assets? I guess the AI would now.
- AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt - that whole thing is a pretty scary thought. If the AI bros are really offloaidng their debts into shell companies, then… to put it into perspectivew, Enron had a damage of ~75 billion USD - but 1.5 TUSD is 20 times that sum.
EMF Camp 2026
Was apparently a really great success, sucks that I couldn’t be there. Kestral’s Real Life Duck befriending game was a notable thing, as well as their talk “Relive: Tell Stories. Save the World.”.
But recordings of talks are available!
New Scientist’s BrainTwister #124: Odd sums
The latest puzzle by NewScientist, BrainTwister #124: Odd sums was a real fresh take on integer sequences, I quite enjoyed it. You start off with simply noting it down on paper, but you quickly realize that it’s getting out of hand. Excellent :-)
